In the eighth century BC, Kush reemerged as a superpower in the middle Nile and ruled from Napta by strong kings who gradually extended their power into Egypt.
About 750 BC, the Kushite king Kashta conqured upper Egypt and ruled Thebes. His successor, Painkhy, subdued the Delta and reunited Egypt. He founded a line of strong kings who ruled Kush and Thebes for about a century..

By about 400 BC, the center of the kingdom had been moved to Meroe, where more than 50 pyramids and tombs were built.
Sudan's pyramids and and royal tombs which rise out in the quite desert of Meroe, in a unique atmosphere, are considered as the most valuable relics of Africa.
